|
Exploring STREETSVILLE In 1818 Timothy Street, a resident of Niagara Township was given the task of surveying the last remaining tract of land along the banks of the Credit River that was ceded to the British government. In return, Street was granted 1,000 acres of land in the new township, and in 1824 this area became known as “Streetsville” Street built a mill (which still stands today) and a home for his family. By 1850 the community had become the centre of commerce in the county and remains a bustling Mississauga area hotspot. Modern Streetsville lies centre along Queen St. (the name of Mississauga Rd, south of Britannia Rd.), and north of Eglinton Ave W. Known as the most original and inviting “Village of the City”, Streetsville contains the largest concentration of historic buildings in all of Mississauga. Merchants and residents are actively committed to preserving the town’s history, unique character and rich architectural heritage. Here, you can take a self-guided historical walking tour, or just enjoy perusing the town’s charming shops, restaurants and coffee houses, which are set in the historic buildings.
