Highland Creek - Toronto Community Info
|
|
Highland Creek is a community in south-east Scarborough in the eastern section of Toronto, that lies along the southern portion of the river of the same name. To the east are the communities of Port Union and West Rouge, to the west West Hill and Woburn, and to the south Centennial Scarborough. As it is along the original highway now renamed Old Kingston Road between Toronto and Kingston, Ontario, it is home to some of the oldest buildings in Scarborough. Highway 2A runs just south of the community core. The University of Toronto at Scarborough and Colonel Danforth Park are in the community. The community is one of the most prestigious neighbourhoods in Scarborough with wide lot homes. Home prices are relatively expensive compared to other areas of Scarborough. This partly due to the location of the university. As one of the older communities in Toronto, Highland Creek was well developed before suburban development reached it in the 1960s. The town was built into the Highland Creek valley as well as around it; the portion within the valley was destroyed and washed away by Hurricane Hazel in October, 1954. Few signs remain of this former neighbourhood. The park access drive (once known as Highland Creek Drive) formed the primary route between Danforth Road (now Colonel Danforth Trail) and Lawrence Avenue.
